So, for example, at a distance of 25 feet, at F6.3, you have got a 0.43 foot zone of sharpness, and at 600mm you’ve only got a 0.19 foot zone of sharpness. And with any lens, when you are the max possible aperture for a given focal length, that allows for the fastest shutter speeds for stopping motion, which is a necessity with many types of long lens photography styles such as sports and birding. When it comes to super telephoto lenses, I’ve long been of the belief that one of the most critical aspects is the max aperture sharpness when fully zoomed-both because you choose a long lens based on that maximum reach focal length, and because with a variable aperture lens design, you trade off some light gathering gathering power in exchange for a more compact design. But for me, for half-sized soccer fields and 60 foot ballfields, the 100-400mm on a full frame or crop sensor camera is the way to go to shave weight with great reach-and on a crop sensor camera, I’d probably find myself racking back to 300mm rather than pinning it at 400mm.įully Zoomed Sharpness of the 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C Versus the 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | C 900mm reach is too tight for many youth sport situations, and even for collegiate and pro sports in many circumstances.įor first grade youth soccer on half-sized fields, I found myself grabbing the 100-400mm to pair with a full frame 6D each week instead of the 150-600mm, both for the focal range and lighter weight- and I’m a huge fan of the total portability of the 150-600mm | C as you can read here. In general for birding, more reach is almost always desired, but in many situations, such as sports, it is possible to be “overlensed”. For telephoto work, I generally stick to the center or center cluster of AF points, and always employ the back-button focus technique, and that’s how all the photos showcased in this piece were captured. Mind you, the 150-600mm is no slouch in terms of AF speed and accuracy, either. Straight out of the box, the autofocus of the 100-400mm | C feels a little more zippy and swift in focus acquisition, and when paired with judicious use of the focus limiters, is blazingly fast, and even more so when the lens is customized to speed-priority AF with the USB Dock and SIGMA Optimization Pro. Both lenses are capable of extending the barrel either with the zoom ring, or with a push-pull of the front element group, although with the 100-400mm, it is a much easier operation when the lens hood is mounted. Ease of use and portability is a key design tenet of the Contemporary line, and both lenses feel solid and well damped. In the hand, both lenses feel similar, dressed in the fit and finish of the Contemporary line.

These moments deservingly get the cheers, for, in them, we see an outlet to show our frustrations. Anand Shankar gives us a steady stream of references to contemporary political events - a chief minister (his party functionaries bow so low before him that he worries that they would get his face wrong when they install his statue!) facing trial installing a proxy to safeguard his position, the flex board culture, the propaganda that parties do with their respective channels, the Chennai floods and the sticker controversy, the hospital drama, the resort farce, a godman trying to remote control the government, and so on. If NOTA works to the extent it does, it is because it unfolds like the highlights reel of the absurd political happenings that Tamil Nadu has been witnessing over the past two to three years. The lack of a strong antagonist, too, results in a political drama that is less punchy than it should have been. Instead, the director devotes more time on a hawala angle that is hardly dramatic. Surprisingly, the film holds on to a revelation about the relationship between this counselor and Vinodhan until the climax, when we easily guess it right in the scene when it is first brought in. Anand Shankar keeps giving us promising leads - a chief minister who is referred to as Rowdy CM, a political opponent (Sanchana Natrajan, impressive) who is equally young and more scheming, a counselor (Sathyaraj, in a Cho-like character) who could have a more personal interest in Varun - but he doesn't follow them through. The chief reason for this is that the characters, including Varun, are underwritten. For, the emotional drama between the characters is quite weak. The political scenes, some of which recall Mudhalvan, are the film’s strengths in fact, its only strengths. The film marks his Tamil debut, but the actor does a competent job there is very little of the slang that we find in actors from other states, though his modulation needs a little work. We do get a hint of this earlier, when we are told that he takes care of a few orphan children, but what really makes us buy into Varun's new-found maturity is Vijay Deverakonda's assured performance. All we get is one scene - a tragedy that is staged in a perfunctory manner - to show us that Varun is someone who cares for others. But NOTA doesn't flesh out this transformation in a gradual way, giving us scenes that show the evolution of this character. The plot is all about how this happy-go-lucky youngster realises his responsibilties and acts for the welfare of the people. And he is bothered about his friends turning these into memes on Facebook! One has his shaking hands with Donald Trump, and another sees him dressed up as Baahubali. More than the prospect of running the state, what worries him more are the flex boards that have been put up by his party men. And he needs someone else to dress him up in dhoti, that trademark costume of a politician. When the governor asks him about the portfolios of his ministers, he is clueless. When he is told that he should take over as the chief minister, he remarks he doesn't even know who the governor is. The first time we see him, he is partying like there's no tomorrow. For, Varun isn't an idealist like Bharat. There is a step-mother and a very young sibling. He is the son of the first wife, who is no more, and resides in London. NOTA Review: The initial set-up of NOTA is pretty similar to the one in Bharat Ane Nenu, where the reluctant son of a chief minister has to take over the mantle from his father. The disinterested young man gradually wakes up to the sorry state of affairs and tries to bring in a change. NOTA Synopsis: Sitting chief minister Vinodhan (Nasser), who is facing imprisonment in an illegal assets case, makes his son, Varun (Vijay Deverakonda) the temporary CM until his return. WALTR2 lets you drag and drop media files into it, and then it slams them over onto your iDevice. But since it did free me of iTunes, I think it's cheap – especially when you consider that it seems as if practically everything Apple-related carries a premium. Available on Softorino's website for $39.95 USD, which would seem to me like a lot to ask if it didn't free me from the tyranny of iTunes. Then my wife found the refurbished, 128 gig iPhone 7 on sale for a reasonable price and took pity on me.Įxcept that it once again saddled me with using iTunes, and I HATE iTUNES! The phone was slow and its performance and connectivity was spotty. I use iTunes with my iPad to get videos onto it for when I travel, but other than that I avoid it like the plague.Īlas, with that Android phone I bought last year (after my previous iPhone decided to commit suicide by flying out of my hand and landing face down on some rocks – hmm, maybe it didn't want to deal with iTunes any more, either!), Ben Franklin's adage of "The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten" reared its ugly head. Well, because of that and iTunes, which has to have one of the most annoying interfaces for a smart device I've ever seen. I've always hated that about Apple, though I like iPhones and iPads better than any Android I've tried, and for years stuck with Google's Android system because I didn't want to knuckle under to Apple's proprietary BS. It was made necessary by my dear wife buying me a refurbished unlocked iPhone 7 for my birthday, after she watched me spend the last year cussing at the cheap unlocked Android phone I'd bought because it was cheap and unlocked and because, with Android, you can add memory instead of (as with Apple) having to buy the capacity you want up front. I came across WALTR2, which is from Softorino, doing a web search for just such a product. And I used it to get nearly 128 gig of my music onto my iPhone! And more. It's called WALTR2 which, perhaps not too surprisingly, is the sequel to WALTR, which I've never tried. There is a number of ways you can do this, getting files onto the device directly, and I found a good one that's easy to use and, mostly, works very well. And, at least to me, that's a really good thing. IPhone users and those with other iOS devices who want to get their media files onto their gadgets without getting frustrated enough to throw them against the wall have a way to avoid that darn iTunes program all together. WALTR2 lets iOS users bypass annoying iTunes app I haven’t tried switching that part of my workflow to Monterey yet because it’s been so easy to do on the mini, but I plan to soon. There were also a couple of audio apps ( Adobe Audition and iZotope RX6) that I use for podcast editing that I continued to run on a 2018 Intel-based Mac mini because they didn’t work with the early betas. Safari was unstable early on but improved significantly over the course of the summer. That’s not to say there haven’t been issues, but none were show stoppers. This year was different in part because I enjoy working on the M1 iMac so much that I couldn’t pull myself away from it, but also because it’s been one of the most stable macOS betas I’ve ever run. Typically, I’ll gradually work my way into using a beta of macOS until I’m using it full-time by August. It’s been an unusually busy summer at MacStories thanks to the expansion of the Club in August, which has meant I’ve given Monterey a workout beyond what I’d normally do during this time of the year. In the interim, I’ve spent every day since early June working in Monterey. I installed developer beta 1 on the M1 iMac during WWDC and haven’t looked back since. It’s a truly remarkable machine and one that may wind up being my next desktop Mac after I return this review unit. I’ve only managed to work the iMac hard enough to make its fans audible once when I was doing some screencast work for Club MacStories. The design looks great on my desk, but it’s the bright, crisp screen and M1’s performance that has made it a pleasure to use daily. I also installed Monterey on a 2016 MacBook Pro, but that was primarily to track down a Safari bug that has since been fixed.Īs an aside, I’m an even bigger fan of the M1 iMac than I was when I first reviewed it, something I’ll be writing about more for Club MacStories+ members soon. In fact, I’ve done the vast majority of all my work on this iMac since June. That’s the Mac that I’ve spent 99% of my time working on with Monterey. Shortly before WWDC, Apple sent me an M1 iMac that I reviewed in July. My testing was a little different this year than in the past.
